Kuk Harrell

 Thaddis Laphonia “Kuk” Harrell is a renowned American vocal producer, songwriter, arranger, and engineer, celebrated for his transformative contributions to pop and R&B music. Over his extensive career, he has collaborated with some of the industry’s most iconic artists, including Rihanna, Beyoncé, Cardi B, Lionel Richie, Celine Dion, Justin Bieber, and Mary J. Blige.

🎤 Early Life and Career

Born and raised in Chicago, Harrell began his musical journey as a drummer and vocalist before transitioning into session work. He later became a commercial writer and producer, contributing to major advertising campaigns for brands like McDonald’s, Kraft, and Coca-Cola. In 1992, Harrell moved to Los Angeles with his writing and production partner, Laney Stewart, where he also served as a worship leader and choir director for Promise Keepers. During this period, he worked on tracks written and produced by Diane Warren and David Foster .

Harrell’s breakthrough came in 2007 when he co-wrote and vocal produced Rihanna’s global hit “Umbrella,” which earned him a Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. That same year, he vocal produced Mary J. Blige’s album Growing Pains, including the single “Just Fine,” which was nominated for a Grammy. These successes solidified Harrell’s reputation as a sought-after vocal producer . 

In 2004, Harrell joined RedZone Entertainment in Atlanta, alongside his cousins Tricky Stewart and Mark Stewart. This collaboration led to further high-profile projects, including Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” and Usher’s “Moving Mountains,” both of which showcased Harrell’s expertise in vocal production .

He contributed to Rihanna’s “Only Girl (In the World),” earning his fourth Grammy Award, and has worked with artists such as Cardi B, Camila Cabello, and Lil Nas X. His involvement in Lil Nas X’s album Montero included the emotionally resonant track “SUN GOES DOWN” . 

Beyond his production work, Harrell is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of vocal producers and engineers through his company, KORE Management, and his nonprofit, the Kuk Harrell Foundation.
